Deputy Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ama Pomaa Boateng has disclosed that AI is now the driving global digital revolution and solving problems and challenges for emerging economies.

The Deputy Minister was speaking at the first face-to-face meet-up networking event, organised by the Ghana-India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT (GI-KACE) on August 25.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Knowledge Series brought together students, innovators, financial services users, enthusiastic stakeholders and industry practitioners in Accra. The networking forum sought to provide a platform to support the community-building efforts of the AI ecosystem in Ghana.

“Financial Inclusion using AI is a very good thing because it is part of the SDGs. It is actually seven out of the 17 goals that government and other institutions are working on using AI to solve problems and getting our Sustainable Development Goals is a big thing to the Ministry,” Ama Pomaa said.

The Director General for GI-KACE, Dr. Collins Yeboah- Afari, emphasised that AI is critical for the world’s development as a country, stating that, AI has made life easier in our financial transactions, adding that “We should consider and target barriers that make access to financial knowledge and services limited or unavailable.”

The CEO of JidiTrust, an informal digital business school, Delamazior Nyanyo, during her presentation indicated that, globally, there are 1.7 billion people who lack access to financial knowledge and services. She entreated that more people, especially girls, should get into ICT and focus on AI to help use its services to their full potential and make sound financial decisions.

Instagram says precise location is never shared

0

Instagram says viral claims suggesting location tags on content can reveal users’ exact locations are false.

Viral posts and videos have said a “precise location” toggle in app location settings on iOS and Android devices could share someone’s exact location with other Instagram users.

Some viral posts suggested this was the result of an Instagram or iOS update.

But Instagram said this is not the case and the feature does not share locations with other users.

What is ‘precise location’?

The setting was first revealed to iPhone and iOS device users in Apple’s annual operating system update, iOS 14, in 2020. It was rolled out by Google for Android 12 in 2021.

When turned on in an app’s location settings it gives them permission to pinpoint an exact location using GPS for certain purposes, typically for travel or collecting background and private user data.

Its usage differs from app to app.

For instance, while Uber might use it to pinpoint your location when booking a ride, on Snapchat it is harnessed for Snap Map – where users can show their location on a map to other users if they have given the app permission or are not in private “ghost mode”.

How does it work on Instagram?

Some of the viral posts said that due to a new iOS or Instagram update, people can find your exact location when sharing your location on posts or Stories.

They also said if users were to post a general location of a city, people would still be able to see exactly where you are as a pin on a map.

They went on to say this feature is being used by criminals to target people, particularly influencers, online.

The claims spread as infographics, viral TikToks and memes – with some urging users to turn precise location off for Instagram immediately.

Instagram has not responded to BBC News’ request for comment on the claims, but tweeted a clarification around how it uses the setting.

Its PR team, InstagramComms, added: “To be clear, we don’t share your location with others. Similar to other social media companies, we use precise location for things like location tags and maps features.”

For instance, users with precise location switched on will see options for locations nearer to them when trying to add a geotag to an Instagram Story or post.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri quote-tweeted Instagram’s response, reiterating that location services is a device setting on phones and not a new Instagram feature.

“We don’t share your location with other people,” he added.

Twitter and Meta take down pro-US propaganda campaign

0

Twitter and Meta have removed from their platforms an online propaganda campaign aimed at promoting US interests abroad, researchers say.

This is the first major covert pro-US propaganda operation taken down by the tech giants, says a report by social media analytics firm Graphika and the Stanford Internet Observatory (SIO).

They removed dozens of accounts used in the campaign in July and August.

It is not clear who is behind the propaganda operation.

The researchers say Twitter has identified the US and the UK as the “presumptive countries of origin”, while Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, said the US was “the country of origin”.

However, the researchers were clear that even though the companies named these countries, it did not prove they were behind the campaign.

“We do not have the necessary information to attribute this activity to a single country or organisation,” the SIO told the BBC.

“What is clear, is that the activity is meant to further Western interests, including those of the US and allies.”

The BBC has approached the US State Department, the UK government, Twitter and Meta for comment.

Who were the targets?

The suspended accounts, some of which were set up almost five years ago, were targeting audiences in the Middle East and Central Asia in multiple languages, according to Graphika and the SIO.

The accounts promoted narratives in support of the US and its allies, while opposing countries like Russia, China and Iran, the researchers said.

They found the campaign mirrored some of the tactics commonly used in propaganda campaigns against the West.

These include creating fake personas using artificially generated images and running campaigns across multiple platforms.

The researchers also found that in addition to Twitter and Meta-owned platforms, the suspended accounts were also active on a number of other social media websites globally.

Similar to previously exposed online propaganda campaigns targeting the West, some of the fake accounts in the pro-US campaign posed as independent media outlets.

In some cases, they attempted to pass off material taken from legitimate outlets, like BBC News Russian, as their own.

The researchers also found that the accounts tailored their messaging depending on the region.

For example, in one campaign targeting Central Asia, accounts focused on praising US aid to the region and criticising Russia for engaging in “imperialist wars” in Africa and Syria, and for the deaths of civilians in Ukraine.

In contrast, some of the accounts targeting Iran criticised Iranian authorities and their policies and posted about issues like women’s rights.

Yet, the overall effectiveness of the campaign was limited, said Graphika’s Jack Stubbs.

The vast majority of posts and tweets reviewed “received no more than a handful of likes or retweets”.

This shows “the limitations of using these inauthentic tactics”, he added.

Andy Carvin, managing editor at US think tank the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, said it would be “ineffective and counterproductive” for democracies to undertake such campaigns.

This is because it meant using “the very tactics used by your adversaries” and “further eroding public trust”, he added.

Eastern DRC students build car using waste material

0

In a Goma factory floor, east of DRC, students are busy on their working stations. They are in the 6th year of mechanic studies at the Institute of technology and industry. They have built a vehicle with waste material after two years of work. This achievement has been a source of pride for the group and their teacher and today, the training continues.

Each time we repair a car engine, Crispin Muyalalo a teacher, explains, if it is a diesel car we always check whether the injection pump is working and ensure that it delivers a consistent flow according to the data of the settings.

The students aged between 15 and 20 have used all the technical skills they acquired to build Max Mad. It is the name they chose for the car shaped like the safari model of a the British car manufacturer Land rover.

In order to make their dream a reality, the group of 12 young students had to overcome material and financial hardships. Their efforts paid off and the impact has exceeded their expectations.

When are project was completed we saw the joy of the inhabitants of the city and suddenly everyone was interested in our project, Samuel Ntamwenge recalls. They promoted it on social media which proves their intention, but we need funding. They may have intention but without funding it remains insufficient. As time passes, we are sure investors will come.”

This vehicle was built using scrap metal and works with a diesel engine. A canister set up in the back serves as fuel tank. Mad Max uses a 1l of oil for 7km which enables the car fuel consumption to meet international standards.

Since we used some discarded elements, we cannot give in detail the sum of money we invested in this project but it cost us around 2500 $, teacher, Crispin Muyalalo shares. Thanks to the car we built, we would for the world and the Democratic Republic of Congo to know that there are talents in the DRC and that the young people that we supervise are able to make great things. They started discarded elements and were able to turn them into something visible.

To develop other samples of these prototype, the students hope for the Congolese government and other benefactors to help them reach the next step.

Ghana maintains 5th position as most attractive automobile market in Sub-Saharan Africa

0

South Africa maintained its 1st position as the most attractive auto market in Sub-Saharan Africa, followed by Mauritius and Botswana.

Ghana has maintained its position as the fifth most attractive automobile market in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) region. This is according to the July 2022 Sub-Saharan Africa’s Auto Sales report by Fitch Solutions, a developing automotive sales environment amid a favourable political risk outlook has enabled policy certainty in the country.

The country managed to outperform its regional peers under Fitch Solutions short- and long-term political risk scores in its Risk Reward Index, scoring a respective 51.2% and 70.2% under these indicators.

However, the report said, Ghana’s underdeveloped road infrastructure remains a deterrent for potential as the country scores 16.9% under its ‘quality and extent of transport network’ indicator, underperforming the SSA region’s average score of 21.6% under the same indicator.

“But, progress is being made with regards to upgrading and developing the country’s road infrastructure with the recent commissioning of a four-tier interchange in Accra underscoring the progress being made to upgrade the country’s roads”, it mentioned.

“Furthermore, an age limit on imported vehicles permitted into the country will develop a local new vehicle sales market going forward as the flow of used vehicle imports slows to the benefit of newer vehicles”, it added.

Meanwhile, South Africa maintained its 1st position as the most attractive auto market in Sub-Saharan Africa, followed by Mauritius and Botswana.

COUNTRY RRI RANK
South Africa 50.7 1st
Mauritius 50.1 2nd
Botswana 44.7 3rd
Gabon 34.6 4th
Ghana 33.6 5th
Tanzania 32.6 6th

Toyota sells stake in Kenya IT firm after row with State

0

The share purchases have pushed Mr Macharia’s ownership in the tech firm he co-founded in 2001 with Dutchman Rob Van Hoek to near 60%

A unit of Japanese multinational Toyota has sold its stake in Kenyan information technology firm Seven Seas Technologies after the company went into a legal fight with the government over a Sh4.7 billion contract. The latest regulatory filing of Seven Seas with the Registrar of Companies Company shows that Toyota Tsusho has transferred its entire stake of 9.5% in recent months.

A 21% stake held by private equity firm Actis has also changed hands. The was previously owned by collapsed Dubai-based firm Abraaj. The shareholder exits followed a two-year legal battle between the government and Seven Seas over the cancellation of the contract to wire 98 State hospitals that, among others, allowed remote treatment or telemedicine.

“The institutional investors exited because of reputational risks. They don’t like drama,” Michael Macharia, the CEO and co-founder of SevenSeas told the Business Daily on Monday. “I bought the shares when the shareholders said they were seeking out,” he added without disclosing the value of the stake sales.

The share purchases have pushed Mr Macharia’s ownership in the tech firm he co-founded in 2001 with Dutchman Rob Van to near 60%. Toyota Tsusho through its subsidiary, CSV Africa, a venture fund it established in 2014, bought the 9.5 percent stake in 2016 for Sh300 million, valuing Seven Seas at Sh3.2 billion at the time.

Toyota Tsusho described CSV Africa as a fund for social contribution for creating jobs and economic independence in Africa and invested in agricultural projects in Zambia and leather sewing business in Ethiopia. The funds from Toyota Tsusho were used to expand Seven Seas’ health sector interests. Toyota Tsusho has had a presence in Africa for nearly 100 years.

Besides the automotive sector, it is involved in Kenya in the development of the energy sector, agricultural industrialisation, oil and mineral reserves. Private equity firm Actis got the 21% stake in 2019 after it acquired the rights to manage funds privately owned by Abraaj, which was the largest buyout fund in the Middle East and North Africa until its collapse in 2018.

Abraaj filed for provisional liquidation in 2018 after investors, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, accused the firm—which had stakes in Brookside Dairies and Java — of mismanaging its money. Its top executives faced criminal charges levelled by US prosecutors and pleaded guilty to several of them, including fraud and racketeering.

Actis did not stay long in Seven Seas, says Mr Macharia, linking its exit to the multi-billion shilling suit with the Ministry of Health. The Business Daily was unable to get an immediate comment from Toyota Tsusho and Actis over the stake sales.

In the legal fight, Seven Seas last month secured a round one win against the government after it was awarded Sh1.6 billion over the botched IT deal. Retired judge and now arbitrator Aaron Ringera found the State at fault in terminating the Sh4.7 billion contract that demanded Seven Seas provide the technology component of the Managed Equipment Service (MES) plan.

Under MES, the Health ministry signed contracts with five private firms in 2015 to lease specialised equipment like CT scanners to the 47 county governments that manage most medical services, in a deal praised by the World Bank at the time for its ability to be replicated elsewhere in Africa.

Seven Seas protested the cancellation, insisting the State declined to offer a Letter of Support, a security document that gives banks comfort to lend project money to firms or individuals, which is customary in a majority of State projects.

The tech firm says the Letter of Support hitch made it difficult to secure a loan from KCB Group, triggering the two-year legal suit that underlined the torturous journey of entrepreneurs working on State projects.

“And I have found that the Second respondent (Ministry of Health) was in breach of both payment obligations under the contract and the obligation to provide a government letter of support. Both defaults are material breaches of the Second respondent’s contractual obligations,” ruled Mr Ringera.

“It was the Ministry of Health’s default in providing the claimant with a government letter of support that prevented Seven Seas from achieving completion of the project,” he added.

He awarded the firm Sh1.59 billion ($13,288,091) for breach of contract, loss of profits and costs incurred after the cancellation. The tech firm received an additional Sh52 million for costs related to the suit.

The arbitrator heard Seven Seas sought funding and got offers, including equity financing for the project worth $30.8 million (Sh3.68 billion), which Mr Ringera said was more than the capital required for the health ICT deal.

Seven Seas was betting on the health sector, especially State deals, to make its next billions and drive its revenues. The firms in the multi-billion shilling leasing deal included China’s Shenzhen Mindray, India’s Esteem Industries, General Electric and Philips.

Seven Seas was expected to digitise the 98 hospitals, including the national referral facilities — Kenya National Hospital and Eldoret-based Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. This was to allow remote hospitals in places like Turkana to tap expertise from well-staffed hospitals like KNH through telemedicine.

WhatsApp brings to you a new feature to enable the admin to delete any message sent in the group by any participant. Feature has been released for iOS devices only.

Following the announcement of the ability to recover deleted messages in its most recent beta for iOS update, WhatsApp is now releasing a new feature which will enable the group admins to delete any message in the group.

According to WABetainfo, the feature has only been rolled out to a few lucky beta users, so it will take some time before it reaches all other accounts.

As per the report: “If you are a group admin and you are unable to delete messages sent by other participants, please wait for a future update because more activations will follow in the coming weeks.”

The report mentioned that it is a significant feature for group admins because they can finally moderate their WhatsApp groups better. Check out the PROS and CONS of iPhone usage.

0

iPhone is a line of smartphones made by Apple. Although initially released as a device to make communication easier, today’s iPhones can do almost anything you want.

These smartphones are considered as one of the greatest innovations of the 21st century due to its impact on so many people.

Every generation of iPhone uses iOS which stands for iPhone Operating System, an operating system developed by Apple exclusively for its devices. The first-generation iPhone was released on June 29, 2007, with a slogan “This is only the beginning” and for 13 years, iPhones have been the most decorated smartphones ever created!

Apple’s brand value has seen some tumultuous changes throughout the last decade, but in 2022 it stood at an impressive 947 billion U.S. dollars. In fact, Apple managed to secure the top spot ahead of Amazon, Google, and Microsoft in the 2022 Most Valuable Brands worldwide. Globally, it is the iPhone that drives sales revenue for Apple. The phenomenon of the company’s lasting success is grounded in customer loyalty. Apple managed to create an air of exclusivity and luxury around their products , and customers keep coming back for more. New users are also enticed by the promise of joining an elite club of iPhone, iPad and Mac owners. This trend is visible when looking at the growing market share of iOS smartphone sales. Therefore, the premium pricing is not a deterrent, but in reality, serves as bait and hook. Apple’s annual financial results are a mirror of their growing success, with global revenue reaching over 274.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2020.

If you haven’t jumped on the iPhone bandwagon yet, let’s highlight the Pros and Cons so you can make an informed decision.

PROS

  1. EASY USER INTERFACE

iPhones have a simple interface and the similarity of the UI between the apple devices make it really easy to operate. The iPhone ensures all apps and functions are being performed the way Apple intends them to which allows for simple user experience. While android has more freedom and choices, users find it comparatively difficult to use.

  1. FEWER SECURITY BREACHES

While you have the freedom of customisation on an Android, it might be costly. Android phones are easy to access and hackers can corrupt your files or even steal your personal information. With the iPhone, things like this are very rare as everything has to first go through Apple’s firewall. However, you should always check before downloading anything from a third party.

  1. PRIVILEDGES

Getting an iPhone also means you’ll be able to use various Apple only features like Apple pay, Apple Car play, FaceTime, iMessage and so on. The popularity of the iPhone has increased priority to the IOS apps. There are many apps like Apollo and Drafts which are not available toAndroid.

  1. iCloud

iCloud is a cloud storage service from Apple. When turned on, it can automatically save all your files and photos to the cloud as a backup in case your device gets lost or stolen. Also, you can access it with your email anywhere with internet access. This is really helpful, and you won’t need your pen-drive or any secondary storage device as everything’s backed up in the cloud.

5.APPLE ECOSYSTEM

iPhone is the ideal phone if you have other Apple devices such as MacBooks, Apple Watch, or iPads. Connecting one device with another is seamless and very convenient. This is really handy if you have to transfer files or photos from your phone to your laptop or vice versa. Apple IOS and macOS have developed to the level where you can start a movie in your phone and continue it later on your laptop.

DISADVANTAGES

  1. OVERPRICED

While the products are very beautiful and sleek, prices for apple products are way too high. Brands like One Plus are really pushing hard on making amazing affordable phones that you feel cheated for paying an Apple premium.

  1. LESS STORAGE

iPhones do not come with SD card slots so the idea of upgrading your storage after buying your phone is not an option. So, you most likely have to buy an expensive higher internal storage version.

To conclude, iPhones are great smartphones and can certainly be a great choice for you. But you should also keep the alternatives in mind, especially looking at Ghana’s economic and exchange rate wahala.

The ANDROID and iOS software- Consumer Preference

0

Once upon a time, we had the likes of Motorola, Nokia, Blackberry, Microsoft amongst others that all tried developing and running their own Operating systems. Blackberry, for example was hugely successful for close to a decade! but over time, two operating systems have stood out remarkably, the iOS and Android. Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS are operating systems now used primarily 95% of mobile technology devices, i.e., smartphones and tablets.

While they do seem to be the best, they do have very obvious differences. Let’s highlights a few.

EXPANDABLE STORAGE

Some android phones come with a micro-SD card slot that can be used to add extra storage to your device. This is great if you want to store lots of movies, pictures, music and documents on a micro-SD card so that your internal storage doesn’t get filled up and can be used for other applications. On the other hand, all iPhone models use internal memory that cannot be expanded. However, there are ways to expand your iPhone’s storage without deleting files by plugging in a flash drive such as SanDisk iXpand flash drive to expand storage via the lightning port.

CUSTOMIZATION

Android is much more customisation friendly than iOS by my estimation. One simple example of how android is more customisable than iOS is giving the user the ability to place apps anywhere in the app grid. On iOS, apps have to be placed in order from top to bottom with no blank spaces. Aside that, you can install third party launchers on iOS that allows you to change the actual size of the app grid, change the icon pack, the animations and much more.

FILE MANAGEMENT

On iOS, there is a no centralised file system, this makes file management cumbersome. Apps on iOS do not have direct access to the file system, instead apps are only allowed to directly access files on their own folder. This means that, if you want an app to have direct access to a file for some reason, you would have to export that file from the file manager to the app you want to use in it.  On android, you have a centralised file system that apps can access to your file system and then all videos stored on your phone will be accessible through the video LAN client (vlc app).

But the obvious preference for either falls entirely on the preference of the user or consumer. To analyse user opinion on Android and iOS software a vox pop was conducted on technology enthusiasts between the ages of 18-40 years, on the topic “Which phone would you buy in 2022; Android/iOS, why?’’.

Below are some of their responses.

“From my personal experience, I will go for Android because: it is user friendly, most of the apps are free, cost friendly, transferring files and apps to a new android device is very simple. Ultimately, android’s processing is smooth against iOS’’. (Jerry, 32 yrs.).

“I think Android has more advantages than Apple, for instance, many apps are free on Android while on iPhone it must be paid for, and the accessories of Android are cheaper than that of iPhone. In conclusion, I think android is better than iPhone, so I’ll purchase the former instead of the latter’’. (Ms. Gertrude Annang, 24 yrs.)

“iPhone is the best operating system. I have been using iOS for over 5 years and I love it because Apple is known for its quality and good features and that puts it above Android. I will still choose iOS over Android’’. (Kwame Anim, 31 yrs.).

“Fashion is my thing. I’ll purchase iPhone if I have the means because it gives you some kind of standard. I also love taking pictures and iPhone’s camera quality is great’’. (Maame Efua Tay, 19 yrs.).

“According to me, Android will be the best resort I should go for. This is because, Android gives me the flexibility and freedom to do anything I want with my device while with iOS you are restricted to many things. For example, you cannot even download an application from the internet’’. In my opinion, Android is an operating system and iPhone is a smartphone (Mr. Charles Kotei, 40 yrs.).

With the above, you can decide which operating system best suits you. However, you should choose your smartphone carefully when switching from Android to iPhone(iOS). They both make compelling arguments and are both beneficial to the end user in every way. These are just my views based on my experience using both.
